VET Certificate III in Applied Language (22150VIC)
This certificate focuses on the practical use of Chinese language in social and workplace settings within an Australian context.
In Year 11 students will complete Units of Competency 1 & 3 which focus on being able to function in a social setting which involves interacting with International Students who visit our school.
Unit of Competency: 1 (VU20604) Conduct routine oral communication for social purposes in a language other than English. At the completion of this unit students will be able to strike up a conversation with a newly arrived International Student and chat about which classes they each like as well as what aspects of life in Australia the International Student is used to or not. They will also be able to help a newly arrived International Student find various places at school.
Unit of Competency: 3 (VU20606) Read and write routine documents for social purposes.
At completion of this unit, students will be able to read and participate in online conversations with visiting students in order to arrange activities and ask how the student feels about certain things.
In Year 12 students complete Units of Competency 2 & 4 which have a workplace focus. The chosen workplace is Sovereign Hill and successful completion of the Units will see students able to assist Chinese tourists. As many assessments as possible will take place on site at Sovereign Hill.
Unit of Competency: 2 (VU20605) Conduct routine workplace oral communication in a language other than English.
At the completion of this unit, students will be able to deliver short rehearsed presentations at the entrance of Sovereign Hill to welcome the Chinese visitors as well as introduce visitors to the must-sees or must-dos in Sovereign Hill and where are these activities located using a map. They will also be able to resolve a minor complaint that a tourist may have.
Unit of Competency: 4 (VU20607) Read and write routine workplace documents in a language other than English.
At the completion of this unit, students will be able to read and answer questions about tourist map of Sovereign Hill. Students will also be able to respond to visitor reflections online, answering some queries on how to improve visitor experiences.
This certificate requires students to complete speaking, reading and writing non-scored competency based assessments during the course.
There is no end of year examination at either Year 11 or 12.
